Born in the United States, Ernest Hemingway's literary career began in 1920s Paris, where he began writing novels. The journeys he undertook as a war correspondent and reporter inspired his plots, from which the unease of what he called the Lost Generation emerged. In 1953, he published The Old Man and the Sea, considered his 'spiritual testament', as it contains all the elements dear to his fiction, in particular the journey as a metaphor for existence and as a test of courage.
