On the occasion of the exhibition Di storie e di arte, Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro, in collaboration with Carlo Montanaro, the Archivio Montanaro, and La Fabbrica del Vedere, presented a selection of four fascinating films depicting everyday life in Venice throughout the 20th century.
On Tuesday, June 17 at 6:00 PM, in the atmospheric Sala Amarcord on the ground floor of Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, the screening of Il Novecento a Venezia will be accompanied by commentary from curator Carlo Montanaro, a film history expert and guardian of a precious visual archive.
Through historical footage, faces, urban views, and real-life scenes, the event offers an engaging visual and narrative journey through a century of Venetian history. A special opportunity to rediscover 20th-century Venice through the language of cinema and the evocative power of moving images.
The selection, the result of collaboration between institutions, archives, and visual memory enthusiasts, presents rare, restored, and digitized footage that bears witness to everyday life, urban transformation, and the emotions of an era. Among the featured films:
Venezia (1908), with a conservative restoration carried out by the Rotary Club of Venice to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding: an extraordinary document from the early years of the century, capturing glimpses and rhythms of the lagoon city at the dawn of the modern age..
Vita dei mercati (1930s), from the Archivio LUCE: a dynamic and authentic view of the city’s markets, the beating heart of Venice’s social and economic life.
A collage of amateur films from the 1930s and 1940s, shot by Stefano La Rosa (LEDA Film) and digitized by the Montanaro Archive: scenes of family and community life that convey the atmosphere of a lived and popular Venice.
I Nua (1950), digitized by the Cineteca del Friuli: a delicate and nostalgic piece that takes us through post-war Venice, filled with both melancholy and hope.
These films are far more than mere visual documents: they are fragments of collective memory, spontaneous narratives that enrich our historical and cultural understanding of the city. Presented as part of the exhibition experience, they offer visitors an immersive and multidisciplinary journey, where art, history, and cinema come together in a single, powerful narrative.
The initiative, free with reservation and included for Foglie d’Oro Card holders, is part of the program of events accompanying the exhibition, running from April 12 to November 23, 2025, reaffirming the Foundation's commitment to promoting innovative and engaging forms of cultural heritage enhancement. An Unmissable Opportunity
The 20th Century in Venice offers a unique chance to discover the city through the eyes of those who lived it, observed it, and loved it. A tribute to the storytelling power of cinema as a tool for preserving and rediscovering memory, set in one of the most emblematic places in Venetian history.
To attend the June 17 event, advance reservation through the Foundation's website is required. Places are limited. The meeting will be held in italian.
