Sala dei ventagli

Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, 2022

A fan is made up of two parts, the stick (the framework) and the mount (what we might call the ‘sail’). The stick is composed of a varying number of blades, which fold in between two guards. Brisé fans have no mounts but are made up entirely of the blades, which may be painted or carved. Centofacce fans depict society or court scenes, or at any rate figurative scenes.

The Sala dei ventagli is adorned with several examples of European and Oriental fans of different sizes, periods (from the 18th to the 20th century) and materials brought together in a single collection. Armouring of different materials and workmanships - ivory, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, bone or precious woods - support the lace, silk or painted pages.
