Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro presents a new collaboration with Carlo Montanaro and the Montanaro Archive for the film selection “The 20th Century in Venice”
On the occasion of the exhibition Di storie e di arte: Three Centuries of Life at Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, Fondazione dell’Albero d’Oro is pleased to announce a new and captivating collaboration with Carlo Montanaro, of the Montanaro Archive and La Fabbrica del Vedere. Curated by Montanaro, this initiative offers the public the opportunity to discover a selection of rare and evocative films depicting everyday life in 20th-century Venice.
Among the highlights of this film collection are restored works from the Cineteca del Friuli, allowing viewers to relive historical moments such as "Venezia (1908)", carefully preserved and restored by the Cineteca, and a collage of amateur footage from the 1930s and '40s by Stefano La Rosa (LEDA Film), now digitized thanks to the Montanaro Archive.
"Vita dei mercati" (1930s), preserved by the LUCE Archive, offers a vivid portrait of Venice’s marketplaces, a vital aspect of the city's social and economic life.
The third film is a compilation of amateur footage from the 1930s and 1940s by Stefano La Rosa, providing intimate glimpses of family and community life in historic Venice.
Finally, "I Nua" (1950), digitized by the Cineteca del Friuli, presents a nostalgic look at the 1950s, evoking the emotions and atmosphere of a time that marked profound changes in the city.
Thanks to restoration and digitization, these films allow us to relive Venice during key moments of the 20th century, telling stories and conveying emotions through the language of cinema.
Screened in the Amarcord Room of Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, these short films provide a unique opportunity to explore the visual testimonies of the city at a time when cinema began to offer a real memory of events. It is an invitation to immerse oneself in the historical and cultural context of a century in which images started to become narrative.
The selected films present a variety of themes related to Venetian life, ranging from market scenes to the more intimate episodes of everyday living, spanning amateur footage to more structured productions.
A unique opportunity to see Venice through the eyes of its 20th-century inhabitants and to reflect on how the city and its memory have been shaped by cinema. The screenings, which are seamlessly integrated into the exhibition path, are free for holders of the Foglie d’Oro Card and will take place throughout the exhibition period, from April 12 to November 23, 2025.
This initiative not only enhances the exhibition experience but also offers a valuable opportunity to explore the city’s history through cinema—as a visual narrative of events and stories that form part of our collective heritage.
